Our events and projects would not be possible without the dedication and fantastic work of our subcommittees.

The Community Subcommittee facilitates the community service and community building work for the ISoc. This includes supporting existing projects, collaborating, as well as starting our own initiatives to support the causes we are most passionate about. This year, our focus is to create a framework for student volunteering in support of refugees, and to collaborate with more social action groups across the university. This will add to our existing platform of supporting the Oxford Homeless Project and tutoring for kids. We are also the team behind the hugely exciting Charity Week which will aim to fundraise, and give back to community during a week-long series of events in November

This year, we want to take ISoc access to the next level. There have been isolated school visits in the past but the potential impact we can have on a university wide scale is significant. We’ll aim to formalise the partner school network using existing contacts, hold our first ever access conference in September, set up an extensive mentorship program and hold subject specific shadowing days throughout the year. All of this alongside many other fantastic ideas people have been suggesting means a very exciting year lies ahead insha’Allah!

The Alumni subcommittee helps maintain the link between the alumni of the Oxford University Islamic Society and the present ISoc. Insha’Allah, we hope to both increase our engagement with the students that have left whilst nurturing a welcoming environment for when they return. The more continuous projects we are involved in include the expansion of the Alumni Database, the creation and sustenance of an Alumni Fund and the establishment of a termly Alumni Newsletter directed at a more formalised alumni mailing list. Alongside this, the individual yet regular events we plan to host are Alumni Dinners and an Alumni Conference, providing a platform for alumni to inform the current ISoc of their experiences both in Oxford and beyond.

The Political Action Subcommittee exists to promote the interests of the Muslim community in Oxford, to combat Islamophobia, and to educate and engage Muslim and non-Muslims in important political matters. Throughout the coming year, the Political Action subcommittee will pursue several threads of actions, roughly divided between events and campaigns On the campaign front, the subcommittee will coordinate two campaigns through the year. One involved continued coordination with the Preventing Prevent agenda, and the other is to push for reform of the BME rep positions in college common rooms, so as to explicitly mandate responsibility for faith-related welfare needs. On the events front, the subcommittee will seek to promote awareness of international Muslim issues, in Syria, Burma, Palestine and other places. In addition, a seminar series is being planned aimed at providing a space for Muslim women in Oxford to engage with and develop their thoughts with regards to a range of ideologies and ideas.
