Magazine Team Applications
Assalaamu alaikum. Please read about the different roles within the magazine team 2024-2025 and find the application form at the bottom of this page.
The deadline for applications is Saturday 22nd June.
Roles
Editor
The Editor sets the direction of the magazine. They are the ‘hands on’ project manager who ensures that deadlines are met, and work is done to a high standard. The Editor must ensure that the impetus for the magazine is kept strong and that the team works together enthusiastically. They should work closely with the Content Curator to ensure that the magazine offers a variety of diverse and engaging content for the benefit of the Society’s membership. They must review all magazine content to make sure it is suitable and compliant with the Guidelines found below.
The Editor may wish to grow the magazine in new ways and reach different groups of people. In this sense, there is a lot of creative freedom for coming up with initiatives to expand the magazine further. It is important that they are conscious of the needs of Oxford’s Muslim community and the way in which this community may respond to different aspects of the magazine. As such, the magazine content should be reviewed carefully and objectively.
The Editor should have a proactive approach to work, be well organised, and have a good eye for detail and written English skills.
Content Curator
The Content Curator plays a key role in conceptualising each issue, primarily through coming up with the ideas for content and ensuring that there is both variety and quality in the work submitted. They work in close collaboration with the Editor and reach out to possible authors, confirming article ideas and ensuring that articles are submitted on time. They also curate Student Works submissions from the wider ISoc community.
The Content Curator needs to be creative, organised and needs to enjoy working with others.
Designers
The magazine’s Designers are responsible for producing the final magazine given the content collected from magazine contributors and edited by the Editor and Content Curator. The Designers will give their creative input throughout the magazine and influence aspects like overall theme, page order, and providing requirements such as word counts and images.
As expected, proficiency in graphic design is a key requirement for these roles. The software used to produce the magazine will likely be Adobe InDesign and experience with this and/or other Adobe products (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator) is recommended but not required. Designers may also help by contributing digital art or other creative submissions; how they split the work may be decided among the magazine team members.
If you have any questions regarding the above, please feel free to send them to magazine@ouisoc.org!
